Learning About Geodes

We picked up an unopened geode in the gift shop at Multnomah Falls a couple of weeks ago, and, for one reason or another, we hadn't cracked it open yet. It was actually Miss V's souvenir pick, so she got to do the actual hammer wielding - with a little assistance from Dad, of course. He gave a little science lesson first about how geodes are formed, and then the kids got to check out the sparkles on the inside.

Pretty neat! I'm sure there's a way to do this that would have yielded fewer shards, but the kids were thrilled.
